:: Rain!
When we first bought the house, the downstairs unit would flood
everytime it rained hard! It was quite a conundrum for many months, till we
finally got it to stop entering the unit by digging a hole in the gap between
the studio and the downstairs wall and putting a sump pump in it. As an additional
measure we created a concrete "culvert" at the base of the wall
at the back border of our property. The idea was to divert all the surface
flow around the house so that it wouldn't get a chance to find its way through
it... and it seems to work!

:: Downstairs Unit
(rental)
When we first
got this unit ready to rent, we still had a problem with flooding (and were
short on cash) so we just painted the concrete floor as a temporary measure.
In October 2004, with the help of our current tenants, we installed tile in
half of the house and laminate wood in the other half. It mad a HUGE difference!

:: Palolo Valley
When we tell people that we live in Palolo Valley, we often get strange looks and exclamations of "Really! You live in Palolo?" This comes from the fact that the low-income housing project is a very prominent part of the valley and someone was shot there in a police stand-off a few years ago. But the valley is actually quite nice and feels very safe. Every morning I wake up, open my door, look out across the valley and think of how lucky I am. We are at the end of a short road and we know all our neighbors. We have a wonderful view of the valley and can see the Palolo Chinese Home for Elderly at the base of 'Dinosaur Mountain'. Just up the road from us is a Zen Buddhist center and beyond that is the start of one of my favorite hikes on the island -- the waterfall trail to Ka‘au Crater.
Virtual 360° view from Diamond Head lookout... Palolo is the only visible (open to the ridge) valley... we are in the way back of it. (click and hold mouse to spin the picture)
